Esquí de montaña

Dependant on snow conditions, good skiers can discover the picturesque ski routes to the Alpujarra area, using normal skis or cross country skis with sealskin. From the highest peaks of the peninsula, with the Mediterranean as a back drop, you can descend via routs of varying difficulty to the towns of the Alpujarra region and enjoy their rustic gastronomy. Mountain skiing is a mixture of mountaineering and skiing with no specifically marked piste, going both downhill, accross and occasionally up the mountain accordingly, it’s a real excursion and naturally a sport with considerable risks. You need special equipment, a good physical preparation and an technical ability to dominate descending through the varying conditions.

This kind of mountain skiing originated in the Alpes during the first decade of the XX centuary when mountaineering was popular in the summer. But, during the winter and spring the higher mountain areas remained closed to all human activity. Today this kind of skiing is popular all over the world. There are clubs that organise all kinds of races and competitions. The material is specialized and consists of skis that are similar to alpine skis but are much lighter and with ski fictures that allow a quick release of the heels for walking. The boots are lightweight with a rubber sole. The sealskin on the ski base enables you to walk easily up hill. Additionally material typical of mountaineering would also be necessary, like thermal clothing, crampons, ice axe etc.

Check your ski level

LEVEL A

This is beginner level, this is your level if you have never skied before or if you have not yet achieved the snow plough (the basic way to stop and turn).

LEVEL B

You will be at a B level if you can stop and turn by using the snow plough movement on a beginner slope. You will be able to ski down the mountain with some control.

LEVEL C

You will have reached the C level if you can turn and stop with your skis parallel on the slopes considered easy to intermediate (blue and green). You will feel confident skiing down hill.

LEVEL D

The skier at D level has a good control of turns in the parallel position and would be progressing onto tighter and shorter turns, using the edge of the ski with ease as well as being able to change ski rhythm when necessary.

LEVEL E

The highest ski level is E, this skier is able to ski with ease and confidence on steep slopes including black runs and in snow conditions of all types including moguls. The E level skier can drive his turns with control and change rhythm and adapt to terrain accordingly.
